Kansas City mayor’s Super Bowl bet with San Francisco: Barbecue, beer and T-shirts

Mayor Quinton Lucas is putting Kansas City’s best on the line in his wager with the mayor of San Francisco over Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and the 49ers.

“We want to first of all congratulate the 49ers on what I hear has been a wonderful season — you have an outstanding team, good work,” Lucas said Thursday. “But as you know, your success comes to an end right now.”

To back up that boast, Lucas has entered a friendly wager with San Francisco Mayor London Breed: If Kansas City somehow doesn’t win, Lucas will send Gates Bar-B-Q, Boulevard Beer, knickknacks from Made in Kansas City and T-shirts from Charlie Hustle.

“All of these are kind of a representation of good local Kansas City businesses and what we are all about,” Lucas said. “That being said, we know we are not going to have to deal with that because I’m looking forward to having whatever it is you have in San Francisco.”

His announcement comes after Rep. Emanuel Cleaver bet his California counterparts some Gates as well. On the Kansas side, Rep. Sharice Davids wagered barbecue from Slap’s in Kansas City, Kansas.

Lucas made his announcement at the Gates restaurant at 12th Street and Brooklyn Avenue.

“It is an exciting time for Kansas City,” Lucas said. “We’ve been waiting for this for 50 years.”

People outside the metro are looking at Kansas City for more than just football and seeing what it has to offer, he said.

“They are seeing, frankly, that this is a city that is dynamic, it’s growing, it’s like on a run,” he said. “It’s amazing not just in sports, but in culture, in business, and frankly it is something I’m exceedingly proud of and honored to be mayor of the city.”

Lucas pointed out that he’s a native Kansas Citian and has been following the Chiefs for around 25 years.

“We haven’t had a lot of fun at times — or at least this big,” Lucas said.

Lucas pointed out that Kansas City’s food is so good, he wants to send Gates to San Francisco, whether the Chiefs win or lose.

“But we aint going to have to,” Lucas said. “Maybe Mr. Gates will do just do it anyway.”’

Consider it like a participation trophy.
