Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for December
More proof that Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu and the Kansas City defense have been coming on strong this season: Mathieu is the AFC Defensive Player of the Month, the NFL announced Thursday.
In the Chiefs’ last four games, Mathieu has recorded 24 tackles, five passes defended, a sack and an interception. The Chiefs allowed an average of 10.75 per game over that stretch, the best in the NFL.
Mathieu, in his first season with the Chiefs, has been a major part of the team’s improvement in the secondary this season and has been selected as a Pro Bowl alternate.
The Chiefs are the second seed in the AFC playoffs and will play host to either the New England Patriots, Houston Texans or Buffalo Bills in the divisional round at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 12.
