Ware participates in Chiefs’ walk-through, but would be ‘questionable’ for practice
The Chiefs conducted a walk-through practice Tuesday, and all seemed good to go with Kansas City’s players ... with the exception of one.
Coach Andy Reid said running back Spencer Ware would be listed as “questionable” if the team had put in an actual practice on Christmas Eve.
Ware was hurt during Sunday night’s win in Chicago against the Bears.
The Chiefs won’t need to assign practice designations until the team officially returns to practice Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.
Ware’s status — in addition to that of guard Andrew Wylie — should become clearer between now and Christmas Day.
If Ware can’t play Sunday, the Chiefs have depth at the position, with Damien Williams, LeSean McCoy and rookie Darwin Thompson all healthy.
The Chiefs have become accustomed to backfield injuries this season and are well equipped to deal with them at this point.
Williams made his return to action Sunday in Chicago after missing three games with a rib injury, while Ware was signed three weeks ago in the wake of Darrel Williams’ trip to the injured reserve list with a season-ending hamstring injury.
“If one gets nicked up, then another one steps in,” Reid said. “So, it’s worked out OK. … We’ve got a good nucleus of guys. They all do it just a little bit different than the next guy. We like the mix that we have.”
Meanwhile, the Chiefs have a decision to make regarding defensive tackle Xavier Williams, who is eligible to return from injured reserve to the active 53-player roster.
Williams started practicing two weeks ago, but Reid said general manager Brett Veach will make the determination whether to activate Williams or keep him on injured reserve, which would end his season.
“We’ll see,” Reid said. “We know he’s a good player and gives us quality depth there.”
