Source: Chiefs bring back running back Ware to fortify backfield ahead of Pats game

With Damien Williams and Darrel Williams banged up, the Kansas City Chiefs made a move Tuesday to bolster their running back group with a familiar face.

The Chiefs have signed Spencer Ware, a source told The Star.

Earlier in the afternoon, Ware posted a photo of himself at the team’s facility on Instagram suggesting he signed with the Chiefs. He followed up with a tweet by stating “unfinished business” in all capital letters.

The 5-foot-10, 224-pound Ware originally joined the Chiefs in 2015 and went on to appear in 38 games with 18 starts from 2015-16 and 2018. He spent the 2017 season on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Ware, 28, signed with the Indianapolis Colts during the offseason but landed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list in early August after undergoing ankle surgery.

The Colts released Ware in September and he had been a free agent since.

As the Chiefs look toward Sunday afternoon’s game at the New England Patriots, Damien Williams is nursing a rib injury and Darrel Williams has a lingering hamstring injury.

The signing of Ware provides the Chiefs with a player familiar with the offense and a plug-and-play option if the Chiefs need him for Week 14’s matchup against the Patriots.

During his time in Kansas City, Ware totaled 1,570 yards and 11 touchdowns on 337 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per attempt. He also proved to be a capable receiver out of the backfield, producing 59 catches for 676 yards and two touchdowns.

Ware joins a backfield consisting of the Williamses, LeSean McCoy and rookie Darwin Thompson. The Chiefs also also have Elijah McGuire on their practice squad.

To make room on their 53-man roster, the Chiefs waived wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, according to Tuesday’s NFL Transactions report.
