Chiefs’ Andy Reid says ‘pretty good chance’ RB Darrel Williams won’t play at Pats
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid didn’t have injury updates from Sunday’s game.
But with the Patriots looming in Week 14, Reid provided insight on running back Darrel Williams’ chances to suit up Sunday in New England.
“Darrel’s injury, he had a hamstring and that didn’t look very good,” Reid said Monday. “So, there’s probably a pretty good chance he doesn’t play.”
Williams was injured in the third quarter and did not finish the game against the Oakland Raiders, a 40-9 Chiefs victory.
He went down without any contact on a rushing attempt around the left end of the offensive line, and appeared in immediate pain while grabbing the back of his left leg.
The second-year running back eventually got up under his own power, but had a noticeable limp as he made his way to the tunnel behind the bench to the locker room.
Without Williams and Damien Williams, who was inactive because of a rib injury, the Chiefs were left with running backs LeSean McCoy and rookie Darwin Thompson.
Thompson ended up playing a season-high 24 offensive snaps, producing a team-high 44 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 carries while impressing his head coach.
“The more he carries it and gets a feel for things, I think the better he’ll be as we finish up the stretch here this season,” Reid said. “It was an opportunity, so I thought it was important he was in with the No. 1 line, for the most part, and he was against their starting defense.”
Meanwhile, defensive end Frank Clark (shoulder) and defensive back Rashad Fenton (hamstring) were the other two players to leave Sunday’s game because of injuries.
The Chiefs return to practice Wednesday and a clearer picture on Clark’s and Fenton’s status for Week 14 will emerge.
