Andy Reid sounds optimistic tone about Eric Berry’s return

The Chiefs could have used safety Eric Berry in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. Perhaps his return is looming.

Andy Reid sounded optimistic on Tuesday about Berry’s possible return from a heel injury that has kept him out since his last training camp practice on Aug. 11 and nearly all of last season.

“We’ll see,” Reid said. “He’s feeling quite a bit better. He’s been making steady progress. We’ll see how this and next week go for him.

“If he feels comfortable and the docs are good with it and he is, we’ll start easing him in.”

The Chiefs are on their bye week after Monday’s 54-51 loss at the Rams. The Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to score 50 points in a game and lose.

Five games remain in the regular season for the Chiefs, who own the best record in the AFC at 9-2 despite the loss. Their next game is Dec. 2 at Oakland.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Sunday that Berry could return to practice after the bye week. It’s not the first time a Berry return has been suggested by national NFL writers. But this time, Reid’s comments could suggest a return next week.

The Chiefs have kept Berry on the active roster this week in hopes of a return to action for the three-time first-team All-Pro.
