Offensive lineman Jeff Allen returns to original team, signs with Chiefs

The Chiefs have signed offensive lineman Jeff Allen to a free-agent contract.

Allen, who spent the previous two seasons with the Houston Texans before he was released in July with an injury settlement, returns to his original team.

Allen was the Chiefs’ second-round draft pick in 2012 and has played tackle, guard and center in his career.

The move comes at a time when the Chiefs have had injury issues with offensive linemen. Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif suffered a broken fibula and torn ankle ligaments against Jacksonville two weeks ago.

In Monday’s game at New England, center Mitch Morse suffered a concussion, and the Chiefs finished the game with Jordan Devey at center and Andrew Wylie, getting his first extensive playing time as a pro, at guard.

After playing out his rookie contract with the Chiefs, Allen left in free agency and signed a $28 million deal with the Texans. He started 26 games with the Texans over the past two years, mostly at right guard.

In four seasons with the Chiefs, Allen appeared in 44 games, starting 36. He played left guard and right tackle in Kansas City.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs waived safety Leon McQuay.
