Remember this? Twenty years ago, Arrowhead flooded and the Chiefs beat the Seahawks
Twenty years ago this week, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Seattle Seahawks for a nationally televised Sunday night game on October 4, 1998. A thunderstorm had moved through the metro area earlier in the day, saturating the ground — including Arrowhead Stadium.
By the time the game started that evening, another thunderstorm was beginning to drop rain on the game. According to the National Weather Service, 3.6 inches of rain fell in downtown Kansas City between 7:15 and 9 p.m.
With 7:10 remaining in the second quarter, the game tied 3-3 and the field flooding, officials called a delay because of lightning. The teams left the field and fans sought shelter until 54 minutes later, when the rain began to subside and play resumed on the field.
The Chiefs went on to win the game 17-6, but the metropolitan area had suffered a devastating flood. The National Weather Service attributed 11 deaths to area flooding from the storms.
