Chiefs’ training camp report, Aug. 14: Time to leave St. Joseph
The offense
It was a last day of school day for the final practice of training camp at Missouri Western, and the Chiefs dialed it back during the 1 hour, 20 minutes spent on the field. They practiced in shells and shorts and did not go full speed in the team periods. … Quarterback Alex Smith zeroed in on receiver Donnie Avery, throwing one incompletion off Avery’s hands before connecting with him on a deep sideline throw against cornerback Marcus Cooper. … Smith hooked up with receiver Junior Hemingway on a wheel route. … Quarterback Aaron Murray found receiver Jerrell Jackson, who beat fellow Missouri alum Kevin Rutland on a corner route. … Rookie De’Anthony Thomas carried the ball from the tailback position.
The defense
Jay Howard worked with the first defense in place of injured Mike DeVito, while rookie Daniel Sorensen replaced Eric Berry, who is still out with a heel injury. … The defense pretty much let the offense have its way in the non-contact practice. … Cooper got revenge against Avery for the earlier play by batting away a pass on a deep post. … Nose tackle Dontari Poe batted down a pass by Smith.
Injury report
DE Mike DeVito (broken hand), DE Mike Catapano (virus), S Eric Berry (heel), LB Josh Mauga (groin), DL Kona Schwenke (shoulder) and CB Damond Smith (adductor) did not practice. FB Anthony Sherman was excused.
Today’s schedule
After breaking camp on Thursday, the Chiefs will have a closed walk-through on Friday at the Arrowhead practice facility.
The number
59
That was the balmy temperature for practice, an almost unheard of temp for a mid-August practice, be it in St. Joseph, River Falls or Liberty.
