How did Chiefs’ fans fire up Jameis Winston?

When Chiefs fans did the tomahawk chop Sunday, it didn’t bother Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who heard the chant all the time when he played at Florida State.

Several times Sunday, as usual, Chiefs fans broke into their tomahawk-chop chant. It was music to the ears of Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Winston.

It’s the same chant heard at Florida State, where he led the Seminoles to the 2013 national championship in a Heisman Trophy-winning season.

“Man, the crowd noise was amazing,” Winston said. “Every third down, they did an O-chant and I was so pumped up. It really made me feel at home. I was even doing it with fans at the beginning of the game.”

So that was the key to the Bucs’ success on third down, going 11 of 16, in Tampa Bay’s 19-17 victory.

“When I saw that number, I couldn’t believe it,” Tampa Bay coach Dirk Koetter said. “Jameis was out of sight today. That was as good of quarterback play of however many years I’ve been in the league.”

On a day Chiefs fans made him feel nostalgic, Winston completed 24 of 39 for 331 yards and a touchdown.
