Chiefs cornerback D.J. White out because of broken hand
Chiefs rookie cornerback D.J. White, coming off his most productive game of this season, won’t play Sunday at Indianapolis after a fracture was discovered in his hand.
White, a sixth-round draft pick from Georgia Tech, had surgery Monday.
“We’ll just see as far as his status for down the road,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.
White was in on 59 defensive snaps, or 80 percent of the plays, in the Chiefs’ 27-21 victory over the Saints on Sunday. White broke up Drew Brees’ first pass attempt.
The extensive playing time was a result of the unavailability of Phillip Gaines, who was on the inactive list after aggravating a knee injury. Gaines was listed as a limited practice participant on Wednesday, along with running back Jamaal Charles.
Besides White, outside linebacker Tamba Hali and offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz didn’t practice. The veteran Hali doesn’t usually practice during the week, and Schwartz played on an ankle sprain last week.
For the Colts, wide receiver Donte Moncrief returned to practice for the first time since last month. Moncrief, the Colts’ No. 2 receiver behind T.Y. Hilton, has been out since injuring his shoulder in the first half of the Broncos game in Week 2.
