Philip Rivers looks to build on his 13-8 record against Chiefs
Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson mentioned that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had won more of the meetings between the players, and he’s right.
Historically, Rivers has been a thorn in the Chiefs’ side with a 13-8 record against them. He’s thrown for more yards, 5,157, against the Chiefs than any other NFL team and his 29 touchdowns against them are the most by a Chiefs’ opposing quarterback.
“His record speaks for itself,” Johnson said. “He’s a proven winner in this league … Philip is one of the great ones.”
Rivers’ 13 victories match the third-most against the Chiefs. The Chargers’ Dan Fouts and the Raiders’ Daryle Lamonica each had 13. The Broncos’ John Elway’s 17 victories over the Chiefs are the most by any quarterback. George Blanda of the Raiders is second with 16.
Rivers became the Chargers’ starter in 2006. Johnson joined the Chiefs a year earlier and his personal record against San Diego is 7-11.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said Rivers presents preparation challenges.
“He can make some of the best throws from the worst angles,” Sutton said. “He has that unique ability to release the ball from any angle. He’s really an outstanding player who moves in the pocket better than people realize.”
