Reports: Cleveland Cavaliers fire Tyronn Lue, NBA champion coach who played at Raytown High

Tyronn Lue, the former Raytown High standout who was the head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA Championship team, was fired by the team on Sunday.

The Athletic first reported the story, which was confirmed through sources by Cleveland.com.

Lue’s interim replacement is expected to be another who played for a Kansas City high school, Larry Drew, who went to Wyandotte High and Missouri.

The Cavaliers are 0-6, struggling in their first season under Lue without LeBron James, who left for free agency.

Lue took over during the 2015-16 season, replacing David Blatt, and Cleveland defeated the Golden State Warriors for the franchise’s first NBA title.

The Cavaliers also reached the Finals in 2017 and 2018 but were defeated by the Warriors.

Lue, originally from Mexico, Mo., played at Raytown High and Nebraska. After an 11-year career with seven NBA teams, Lue became an assistant coach. He was the Cavaliers’ associate head coach when he got took over the team midway through 2015-16. His career record is 128-83.
