After Raul Mondesi commits error in debut, Royals send video to league office for review
In the first regular-season game of his career, Royals rookie Raul A. Mondesi committed an error in the first inning of a 13-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night. One day later, the Royals sent the play to the league office for a scoring review, hoping to get the error expunged from his record.
The error in question came on a hard chopper off the bat of Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Mondesi couldn’t corral the baseball, and the official scorer at Kauffman Stadium charged an error on the play.
Major League teams are allowed to send close scoring decisions to the league office for a video review. The Angels also sent the play into MLB, hoping to pick up a hit for Simmons. Royals manager Ned Yost, responding to a reporter’s question, lobbied for the call to be changed.
“That was a rocket,” Yost said. “I was shocked to see that called an error.”
Mondesi, who turned 21 Wednesday, was back at second base for the second straight night. He finished 0 for 3 in his regular-season debut Tuesday.
Cain opens rehab assignment
Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain officially began a rehab assignment for Class AAA Omaha on Wednesday. The Storm Chasers continued a road series in Round Rock, Texas. Cain started in right field, a position he could play for the Royals when he returns to the lineup.
Cain has missed 24 games since suffering a strained hamstring against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 28. Entering Wednesday, the Royals were 6-15 in those games.
