Alex Gordon is edging closer to a return in a Royals uniform.

He took batting practice for the second straight day, and manager Ned Yost said his rehabilitation assignment could come as early as this weekend.

“We’re getting close to sending him out, it could be as early as this weekend,” Yost said. “He’s swinging the bat awfully well. There are a lot of balls floating in the fountain out there.”

Gordon suffered the wrist injury May 22 during a collision with Mike Moustakas in Chicago. The Royals initially estimated that he could miss three to four weeks. Gordon will hit the four-week mark Monday, the day before the Royals begin a two-game series against the Mets in New York.
