The baseball bounced off the left-field wall and ricocheted back toward a waiting Brett Eibner, but before it reached him, Eibner came up limping.

The Royals left fielder departed Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays with what the team later called a left lateral ankle sprain. He will be evaluated further Wednesday.

Eibner left the field on a cart. It was a non-contact injury after Rays shortstop Brad Miller hit a ball off the wall.

Eibner was able to collect the ball and flip it to center fielder Lorenzo Cain before falling to the grass.

Eibner is a former second-round pick who made his debut Friday. On Saturday, he hit a walkoff single to finish off the Royals’ seven-run comeback in the ninth inning against the White Sox.

Eibner was 1 for 2 in the game, raising his average to .462.
