With regulars gone, Royals lose 4-2 to Diamondbacks in final spring training game
As a group of regulars boarded a morning flight headed for Kansas City, the Royals concluded their spring training schedule on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Yordano Ventura allowed a run and four hits in two innings, throwing 43 pitches in his final tuneup start before the regular season. Ventura, who allowed 10 runs in his last appearance, is slated to make his debut against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. He was pitching Saturday with a pitch count of around 40 pitches.
With the Royals set to face the New York Mets on Sunday night in the season opener for both teams, manager Ned Yost trotted out a lineup full of minor-leaguers on Saturday. Outfielder Brett Eibner finished 2 for 3 with an RBI while Christian Colon started at second base and had two hits. Colon is expected to open the season as the Royals’ backup infielder.
Left-hander Brian Duensing allowed three runs while working the seventh inning, his first appearance since re-signing to a minor-league deal earlier this week. Duensing is expected to begin the season at Class AAA Omaha.
Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang was among the Royals players who flew to Kansas City on Saturday morning. Wang, a non-roster invitee, is expected to make the opening day roster, which is expected to be released on Sunday morning.
