Royals make moves ahead of reserve list deadline

The Royals made a trade and added two players to their 40-man roster before baseball’s 11 p.m. Thursday reserve list deadline.

Left-hander Kyle Bartsch was sent to San Diego for 23-year-old outfielder Reymond Fuentes, who played 23 major-league games in 2013 for Boston, hitting. 152 with three stolen bases. He spent 2014 in Class AA San Antonio and Class AAA El Paso for the Padres, hitting .261 with nine doubles, three triples, a homer and 13 steals in 46 games after his promotion.

The Royals also selected the contracts of Class AA outfielder Jorge Bonifacio and infielder Orlando Calixte, protecting them from the Rule V draft.

Bonifacio, 21 and the younger brother of former Royals utility player Emilio Bonifacio, hit .230 with 20 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 51 RBIs for the Naturals. Calixte, 22, hit .241 with 15 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 43 runs scored, making the Texas League All-Star game.

The moves leave the Royals with 38 players on their 40-man roster.
