A travel day in the ALCS as the Royals and Blue Jays returned to Toronto. The Jays were still in command of the series, leading 3-2. The headline in The Toronto Star after the Royals’ 2-0 victory in Game 5 remained hopeful. “Not Yet: Royals Force Another Game in Toronto.”

In the story, Jays outfielder Jesse Barfield said a confident team was headed home. “If we can’t win one out of two we don’t deserve to be in (the World Series),” he said. “We just have to tighten our belts.”

In Game 6, the Royals manager Dick Howser tabbed Mark Gubicza, who would make his first (and only) postseason start. Jays manager Bobby Cox named veteran Doyle Alexander.

And the champagne, which had been chilling in the visitor’s clubhouse in Kansas City, would make its way to Toronto, with an opportunity for the Jays to pop corks after Game 6.
