Vargas happy with first outing as Royals beat Padres 7-3

Arms race

Brad Penny is a two-time All Star with 119 career victories, so a spring-training appearance only means so much. But Penny, who is likely headed to Class AAA Omaha as rotation depth, got tagged in his Cactus League debut. San Diego outfielder Cameron Maybin launched a two-run homer off him in his first inning of work. Penny also gave up a run in the fourth.

Medical updates

Second baseman Omar Infante sat out for his second day in a row. He is nursing a minor case of stiffness in his right shoulder and expects to rest for another couple of days before returning to action.

Reliever Louis Coleman (bruised right middle finger) continues to throw bullpen sessions but has yet to pitch in a game.

Etc.

• Mike Moustakas continued to accumulate hits at the plate. He stroked a second-inning double for his team’s only hit off Padres starter Ian Kennedy.

• Salvador Perez will have a day off behind the plate today.

Countdown to opening day: 29 days
Up nextThe Royals will play the Cubs in Mesa today. Wade Davis will start, with Yordano Ventura scheduled to follow him.
