Royals move game time for rare ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ appearance due to weather
The Kansas City Royals have moved up the start of their rare Sunday night baseball game due to the threat of inclement weather, the club announced in a news release.
Today’s Royals game is now set for a 3:10 p.m. first pitch (Peacock/NBCSN) due to the threat of poor weather conditions, the club said Sunday.
The game was originally scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
“They called about 10:40 a.m. and said it was a possibility,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(They said), ‘We’ll let you know in about 15 minutes.’ (And) in 15 minutes, here we go.”
Kansas City will face the Los Angeles Angels in the series finale at Kauffman Stadium having already won the first two games of the series. The Royals take a 10-17 record into Sunday’s game. Los Angeles is 12-16, having lost six of seven overall.
Quatraro kept the same starter for Sunday’s finale against the Angels. The Royals will roll with right-hander Seth Lugo, who received the first call from Quatraro after the schedule change.
The Royals then made sure to account for everyone. Players were notified with phone calls and given alerts of the change.
“By the time I got here, a lot of them were already here,” Quatraro said. “So they seemed to adapt fine to it.”
Prior to Sunday’s game, there was no batting practice on the field. A few Royals got some on-field work, but most did their routine in the batting cages.
Quatraro admittedly hadn’t experienced such a quick change. However, he is confident the club will be ready to go once first pitch arrives.
“It’ll be fine,” Quatraro said. “It’s just different, you know? I mean, it feels a little rushed, but guys will still have plenty of time to hit in the cage, run and get their treatments.”
The Royals, who are off Monday, will have to wait for their first “Sunday Night Baseball” action since 2016, but they’ll get their next chance on May 10 against the Detroit Tigers. That game, set for a 6:20 p.m. first pitch at Kauffman Stadium, will be available on Peacock.
The Royals will also play a Sunday night game in September.
