The Royals’ search for a new stadium has had many twists and turns over the past two years, and there was one final curveball this week.

Nearly everyone thought the City of Kansas City had focused on a ballpark being constructed at Washington Square Park. But then word arrived that there was a slightly different location for the stadium.

That news came after the Royals announced they would hold a media event Wednesday morning at Crown Center. It included team CEO and chairman John Sherman, Missouri Gov, Mike Kehoe and Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas.

Crown Center is the location of the new stadium, and the Royals boasted the ballpark “would push from the bottom into the top 10 in walkability among Major League Baseball teams.”

“Our founder Ewing Kauffman wanted the Royals to be Kansas City’s forever, and he wanted the team to benefit his hometown as much as possible,” Sherman said in a news release. “Joining Hallmark with this project achieves both and extends the Hall family’s critical legacy of helping Kansas City grow.”

While they are not the final renderings that Sherman will likely get (or has already seen) from the Kansas City architectural firm Populous, initial looks were shared with the public on Wednesday. Sherman has previously said there are two features he wants to see in a new Royals stadium, and they are both in the renderings.

The fountains and the crown videoboard are included in the first concepts that were shown.

Here is a look at renderings shared Wednesday.
