How the Royals settled on new City Connect uniforms — and a first look at them
The Royals’ official team colors are Royal blue and gold, but a new one is coming Friday.
The Royals released a look at their new City Connect uniforms, and the players will be wearing white but with blue and purple touches. They are being dubbed “Forever Fountains” by the team.
Tony Snethen, the Royals’ senior vice president/chief marketing officer, explained how the team came up with the concept and why they’re using purple.
“The thing we’re most excited about is we’re expressing a new color palette, and it really harkens back to the history of our city,” Snethen said. “We looked back at the City of Fountains logo that was created in 1991 and adopted down at City Hall. But we wanted to kind of stay with where we were with the 1.0 City Connect. So you’ll start to see some of these same logo references and lines that we used in 1.0 but then bringing in that new color palette with the gradient.
“The gradient, for us, means a number of things. That the city is always moving. We’re moving forward. Water is fluid. We wanted to stay consistent with that fountain theme. We brought in a heart patch on the sleeve, and that is one of the things that we’re excited about, because it’s talking about that we’re the middle of the country.”
The uniform has an “R” logo that was on the sleeve of the first City Connect uniforms. The team said it is a nod to the Royals’ 1969 franchise start and combines the past with current traditions.
Major League Baseball requires teams to change their City Connect look every few years. And that’s why the Royals unveiled their new uniforms Thursday at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals will wear these uniforms during each Friday home game this season.
The Royals shared additional details about the jerseys in a social media post.
