Report: Fox Sports nearing deal with MLB to allow local streaming of 15 club’s games, including Royals

No TV at the restaurant and you want to watch the Royals in Kansas City?

Starting next year, you’ll have the ability to watch live Royals games on your phone or laptop — games that MLB.com currently blacks out if you’re located in the Royals’ broadcast territory.

Sports Business Journal reported Monday that Fox Sports is expected to reach an agreement with Major League Baseball that will allow the streaming service.

The Royals are one of 15 teams whose local media rights are held by Fox. This season, Fox Sports Kansas City or one of the Fox networks has televised every Royals game that hasn’t appeared on ESPN.

Under the proposed agreement, Royals fans would able to access games through the FoxSportsGo app or Fox Sports Kansas City’s website after an authentication process. A cable subscription would be required.

It’s too early to speculate on a possible fee for the streamed games, but NBA games were streamed locally last season and there was no additional charge beyond a cable subscription.
