The Kansas City Royals signed utilityman Cavan Biggio to a minor-league deal ahead of the 2025 season.

Biggio, 29, has a baseball pedigree. His father, Craig, starred with the Houston Astros and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Cavan Biggio has spent six seasons in the majors, playing with the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves.

In 2024, Biggio posted a .197 batting average with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 78 games. He is a versatile defender who has logged playing time at positions across the diamond.

Biggio was a fifth-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. He debuted with the Blue Jays in 2019 and finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. He recorded 35 extra-base hits and 14 stolen bases during his rookie campaign.

The Royals have searched for a left-handed bat that could play third base. The club utilized MLB veteran Adam Frazier in the role last season. Biggio has a chance to compete and earn a roster spot with the Royals in spring training.

KC has found success with minor-league free agents in recent years. Last season, the club relied on reliever Sam Long in high-leverage situations. Long joined the Royals as a minor-league free agent during the 2023 offseason.

Biggio can follow a similar path. The Royals currently have potential bench spots available after the departures of Frazier, Garrett Hampson, Paul DeJong, Tommy Pham and Yuli Gurriel in free agency.

It’s possible the Royals could reunite with some of their veteran free agents. For now, Biggio is another organizational option with Major League Baseball experience.

KC has also signed pitchers Austin Cox, Taylor Clarke, and Junior Fernández to minor-league contracts in recent weeks.
