One of KC Royals’ top sluggers returns for pivotal series against Minnesota Twins
Kansas City Royals outfielder Hunter Renfroe is set to return to action on Friday night against the Minnesota Twins.
Renfroe, 32, was reinstated Thursday from the 10-day injured list. He had missed 12 games with a right-hamstring strain.
This season, Renfroe owns a .237 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. He has a .710 OPS (on-base plus slugging) and should infuse more production into the Royals’ lineup.
The was sent on a brief relief assignment Wednesday. He went 1-for-4 in five plate appearances with Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
The Royals optioned right-handed reliever Steven Cruz to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. And veteran pitcher Dan Altavilla returned from a rehab assignment and was designated for assignment.
The Royals have 21 games remaining this season. Renfroe will be utilized in right field and as a designated hitter. He could also play some first base.
Last weekend KC signed veteran major-leaguers Tommy Pham, Robbie Grossman and Yuli Gurriel. Pham has thrived in the leadoff role and played right field since being acquired.
Pham could still factor into the Royals’ outfield mix as Renfroe returns. Manager Matt Quatraro is likely to utilize him in different roles.
The Royals begin a crucial series against the Twins this weekend. The teams are tied for second place in the American League Central, 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the divisional race.
In the AL Wild Card picture, meanwhile, the Royals and Twins hold the final two spots. They are 5.5 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.
