Two Royals set for surgery after injuries in Toronto. Here is the plan moving forward
The Kansas City Royals are expected to be without pitcher Austin Cox and catcher Freddy Fermin for the remainder of the 2023 season, according to timelines outlined by manager Matt Quatraro.
Both players were injured in the Royals’ recent series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Cox injured his left knee attempting to cover the first base bag, and Fermin fractured his left middle finger during a catcher’s interference.
Quatraro provided an update prior to Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox.
“Cox (was a) confirmed full tear of the ACL among other things — MCL and some meniscus,” Quatraro said. “The full extent of that won’t be known until they go in and do the surgery.”
Fermin had surgery Tuesday morning. Quatraro said Fermin could miss multiple weeks with the injury.
“He had his surgery this morning to place, I believe, three pins in the knuckle,” Quatraro said. “That will be in for about three weeks. They anticipate him being back to full activity in about eight weeks.”
Fermin hit .281 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs this season. Cox had a 4.54 ERA in 35 2/3 innings pitched.
KC will look to fill the void at catcher with new addition Logan Porter. He was set for his MLB debut against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.
The Royals dropped Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader 6-2 against the White Sox.
