The Kansas City Royals placed outfielder Edward Olivares on the restricted list Friday.

Olivares, who has appeared in 47 games this season, will miss the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled Nate Eaton from Triple-A Omaha.

“He has a personal thing to take care of today. No more clarity than that,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(We) are expecting him back tomorrow.”

Olivares is hitting .232 this season with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He is able to come off the restricted list once he returns to the team.

Players can be placed on the restricted list for different reasons. In this case, Olivares is able to step away to handle any non-baseball situations.

Royals fans may be familiar with the restricted list from the 2022 season, though Olivares’ situation appears to be completely unrelated to what the club dealt with last year.

In 2022, the Royals placed 10 players on the COVID restricted list ahead of their road trip to Toronto. This was due to those players not meeting Canada’s vaccine mandate.

Olivares can be available at any point. In his absence, the Royals will turn to Eaton to provide additional bench depth.

Eaton was up with the Royals earlier this season. He recorded three hits across 52 at-bats (.058 average) and has played each outfield spot.

Olivares has split time with Nick Pratto in left field. Pratto drew the start Friday night against Orioles pitcher Tyler Wells.
