Kansas City Royals add Philly pitcher in morning trade, designate Reyes for assignment

The Royals have added to their pitching depth with a trade.

Kansas City acquired right-handed pitcher James McArthur from Philadelphia on Monday morning for minor-league outfielder Junior Marin and cash.

Additionally, KC designated outfielder/designated hitter Franmil Reyes for assignment.

McArthur, 26, was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Thursday. The Royals are optioning him to Triple-A Omaha.

The 6-foot-7 McArthur pitched in five games for Philadelphia’s Triple-A team this season, posting a 7.31 earned-run average with 15 strikeouts and seven walks. He struck out 10.26 batters per nine innings in 13 Double-A starts last season, posting a 5.05 ERA.

Marin, 19, joined the Royals in March 2021 out of Venezuela as an international free agent.

Reyes, meanwhile, was optioned to Triple-A Omaha last week. He hit .186 with two home runs and seven RBIs for the Royals in 19 games before his demotion.
