Updated: Steady rain, strong winds forecast for Royals-Orioles ALCS game
Anyone heading to Kauffman Stadium on Monday night for the Royals’ American League Championship Series clash with the Orioles should be prepared for a soggy, chilly evening.
“If they do get this game in, it’s going to be chilly, so bundle up for the conditions and any waterproof outerwear that you can wear will certainly help,” said Spencer Mell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service said the rain was tapering off a bit early this afternoon, but the rain and wind were expected move back in by 7 p.m.
“It’s a very winter-looking like system where you typically get your rain and that will move through and on the backside you get a snow band,” Mell said. “A lot of times we will see areas in the wintertime get on a snowband and catch four to six inches of snow on the backside of a system like this.”
Fortunately, it’s warm enough that the backside is rain.
“You can see the rain across eastern Kansas right now,” Mell said. “That’s going to press very slowly eastward as we go through the late afternoon and evening.”
Mostly light rain is falling, although there are pockets of moderate rain. There’s not a lot of reports of heavy rain falling, he said.
At game time, light rain likely will be falling and continuing to fall through most of the evening and into the night. It is not expected to start to clear until about midnight.
“The one positive is that it looks like most of the severe weather and lightning associated with this system is going to be south and east of the area today,” Mell said. “We are mainly dealing with a rain event here.”
Temperatures will be in the lower- to mid-50s for the game. Winds will also pick up out of the north reaching about 20 to 25 mph.
“It’s going to be blustery evening out there for sure,” Mell said. “With that wind and the damp cold air, it’s going to feel chilly out there.”
