Kansas City Royals left-handed relief pitcher Amir Garrett begins a minor-league rehab assignment on Wednesday night, becoming the first of a likely influx of pitching reinforcements.

Garrett has been on the COVID-related IL since May 26. He hasn’t pitched in a game since May 24 in Arizona. During that same road trip, the Royals placed left-handed reliever Gabe Speier and right-handed reliever Matt Peacock on the COVID-related IL.

Garrett, acquired from the Cincinnati Reds during spring training, has been back with the club throughout this current homestand. He’s been taking part in a throwing program as part of his progression towards a rehab assignment and eventual return to the major-league club.

In 16 appearances (13 2/3 innings) this season, Garrett has a 4.61 ERA with a .093 opponent’s batting average, a 1.10 WHIP, 16 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Speier and Peacock have been on the IL since May 30. Both have been back in the clubhouse this week as they begin their own progressions. Royals manager Mike Matheny said they would also go on rehab assignments before they rejoin the major-league club.

Because the IL stints were part of a COVID-related outbreak, the Royals were able to add players to the major-league roster who were not previously on their 40-man roster.

That’s how Arodys Vizcaino and Jose Cuas came to make their debuts for the Royals during the most recent road trip.

Cuas, a sidearm thrower, is a former position player who converted to a pitcher, was released, worked for a period for FedEx and endured multiple stints in independent ball to make it to the majors.

The Royals have also been without starting pitcher Zack Greinke since May 30 due to a right flexor strain.
