The last time Johnny Cueto took the mound at Kauffman Stadium, he allowed one run on three hits and threw a complete game as the Royals beat the Mets 2-1 in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series.

The Royals hope he won’t be nearly as good on Monday.

Cueto, who signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox in the offseason after six seasons with the Giants, was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and will start Monday’s game against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

In four games at Charlotte, Cueto had a 5.17 ERA but had struck out 17 batters in 15 2/3 innings.

The Royals acquired Cueto shortly before the trade deadline in 2015, one of the biggest deals made that summer in Major League Baseball. Cueto had a 4.76 ERA in 13 starts for the Royals.

In addition to helping the Royals take a 2-0 lead over the Mets in the World Series, Cueto was the winning pitcher in Game 5 of the Division Series against the Houston Astros. He allowed two runs on two hits in eight innings.

As in the regular season for the Royals, Cueto had uneven success on the mound, as he also was lit up by the Blue Jays in the Royals’ 11-8 loss in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.

The Royals hope to see that version of Cueto on Monday night.
