Heavy rain and the forecast of continued rainstorms forced postponement of Friday’s Royals-Twins series opener at Target Field in Minneapolis.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday featuring two 7-inning games. The first game will start at 12:35 p.m Central; the second will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Royals manager Mike Matheny announced Friday that right-hander Ian Kennedy would start the series-opening game in an “opener” role, with previously scheduled starter Jakob Junis following Kennedy after an inning or two.

Kennedy will start the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Saturday’s scheduled starter, Danny Duffy, will start the second.

The Twins will stick with their schedule starting pitchers — right-hander Jake Odorizzi, Friday’s scheduled starter, and right-hander José Berrios — for the doubleheader.

The Royals (8-11) won 5 of 6 games before a day off Thursday. Those five wins include a three-game sweep of the Twins (12-7) at Kauffman Stadium last weekend.

The Royals also activated outfielder Bubba Starling from the injured list Friday. He’d been placed on the IL last week with no injury listed.
