Led by Sal Perez and Lorenzo Cain, five Royals still in starting position for All-Star Game
The second batch of American League All-Star voting has been released and the Royals continue to dominate the balloting.
Leading the votes at their infield positions are third baseman Mike Moustakas, catcher Salvador Perez and shortstop Alcides Escobar, while Lorenzo Cain leads the balloting among outfielders and Alex Gordon is third.
Those are the same positions the Royals players held after the first All-Star votes were released last week.
Perez is the leading vote-getter among all American League players with 2,681,063 votes. Cain is second overall at 2,506,859.
Other Royals are close to the top. First baseman Eric Hosmer trails only the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera. Second baseman Omar Infante trails only the Astros’ Jose Altuve, and designated hitter Kendrys Morales is second to the Mariners’ Nelson Cruz.
The last Royals player elected to start in an All-Star Game was outfielder Jermaine Dye in 2000.
The pitchers and reserves for both squads will be determined through player ballot and by the All-Star managers, Ned Yost of the Royals and the Giants’ Bruce Bochy.
Nine AL starters will be voted in by the fans, and Yost and the players will have 24 other spots to fill. In the NL, it’s eight started voted in — no designated hitter on the ballot — and 25 spots filled by Bochy and the players.
Baseball will once again turn to fans for a final spot for each team. The 34th and final roster position will be determined by fans, who will cast votes from a list of five players in each league.
Voting runs through 11 p.m. July 2 at MLB.com and totals will be updated every week until June 29. The 86th All-Star Game will be played on July 14 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
