Royals catcher Salvador Perez left Sunday’s 8-3 victory against the Padres in the fifth inning after experiencing tightness in his left side. Royals manager Ned Yost described the move as precautionary. The injury was not considered serious.
Perez grimaced after taking a swing during his at-bat in the third inning. He initially downplayed the issue. But after the Royals’ staff pushed, he relented, which caused Yost to exercise caution.
“[He] took a swing and felt a little tightness in here,” Yost said, pointing to his left side. “He didn’t say nothing, and we kept prying, and he said: ‘Yeah, it’s a little tight.’ I’m not taking any chances.”
Perez told reporters that he was fine. He expects to be in the lineup on Tuesday when the Royals open a three-game series in San Francisco.
