A B-squad of Angels peppered Royals starter Jason Vargas in a 7-6 defeat in 10 innings on Saturday. Los Angeles scored five runs off Vargas in his second inning of work, aided by a fielding error by rookie catcher Francisco Pena.

Vargas yielded eight hits in three innings of work. Pena dropped an accurate peg from Jarrod Dyson that would have netted an out in the second frame. Four runs scored after that, including a pair on a double by Collin Cowgill.

"I don’t know what to really chalk it up to, other than they were barreling the ball and I wasn’t putting them away," Vargas said.

Brandon Finnegan gave up a solo homer during his inning of work. He followed a pair of spotless frames from Greg Holland and Wade Davis.

Matt Fields tied the game for Kansas City with a three-run shot in the seventh inning. The Angels grabbed the lead with a sacrifice fly off Royals newcomer Brian Broderick for the go-ahead run.
