Former Mizzou pitcher Max Scherzer was really, really good Sunday
Days like the one Washington pitcher Max Scherzer had Sunday don’t come along very often.
Scherzer’s 16 strikeouts were the most since the franchise moved to Washington from Montreal in 2005.
Oh, and until a broken-bat bloop single in the seventh inning, Scherzer had a perfect game.
His only other blemish in the Nationals’ 4-0 over the Brewers in Milwaukee was an eighth-inning walk.
“I was able to execute every pitch for the most part where I wanted to,” Scherzer said.
His day put him in some pretty elite company.

— Baseball Tonight (@BBTN) June 15, 2015Of the 119 pitches he threw, 86 were strikes.
Bill James’ Game Score metric further quantifies just how good Scherzer’s day was.

— MLB Stat of the Day (@MLBStatoftheDay) June 14, 2015Deadspin notes that Scherzer was just the 12th pitcher to achieve a score of at least 100 in a nine-inning game, while there have been 23 perfect games in major-league history.
So, in a way, Scherzer was better than perfect.
The Royals start a two-game series against the Brewers on Monday. Here’s how each of their hitters fared Sunday.
