Lincoln Prep student honored on field before Game 4 of World Series

Lincoln Prep sophomore Carmen Gudino had a once-in-a-lifetime experience on Saturday.

Gudino was on the field at Dodger Stadium ahead of Game 4 of the World Series as Major League Baseball honored a “Youth of the Year” from each of the nine Youth Academies run by MLB teams.

Darwin Pennye, the director of the Royals’ Urban Youth Academy, penned this nomination letter about Gudino:

Carmen is a Sophomore at Lincoln College Prep. She was chosen because of being an inspiration to all who come into contact with her. She exemplifies our character trait of being thankful. Girls in her community have very little opportunity to play softball as the inner city high schools near us don’t have a team. She has competed through Police Athletic League and has taken advantage of every opportunity to be at the KCUYA. Every clinic or instruction that we offer she has participated in since day one of our facility’s opening. She also serves as a manager for Lincoln’s baseball team, thus showing her love for the sport and her fellow students-athletes. She volunteers at the KCUYA whenever called upon and is a part of other groups like Camp Win as well as being on her school’s student advisory board. Her positive attitude on daily basis was never more evident as it was during the Commissioners’ Cup in D.C. Our girls lost every game by a large margin, but Carmen found something positive and had a smile on her face just because of the opportunity she had. Each day she feels blessed to be a part of the KCUYA. We are honored to have a young lady like Carmen exemplify what it means to be ‘Raised Royal.’ Her servants heart, willingness to compete despite the circumstances, and her love for others over self is why we chose Carmen.”
