Paola advances at Kansas Class 4A Division I state baseball tournament

Paola scored six runs after a 90-minute lightning delay for a 9-2 win over Chanute in the state quarterfinals on Thursday at the Kansas Class 4A Division I baseball state tournament.

Paola, 18-5, will face Andover Central, 13-10, in Friday’s semifinals.

Chanute took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Paola took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, then scored four runs in the fifth inning after the delay.

Donovan Sutti, Dalton Rankin and Nathan Staats led Paola with two RBIs each. Sutti had two doubles, while Rankin went 3 for 4.

Blaine Hanf was the winning pitcher for Paola, going six innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs.

Andover Central 4, Eudora 2

Andover Central’s Cole Taylor laced a two-out, two-run double in the third that triggered a 4-2 upset of top-seeded Eudora.

Taylor came up with Andover Central trailing 1-0, and sent a pitch from Zach Courbat deep over center fielder Ben VanDiest’s head.

Eudora, 18-5, cut Andover Central’s lead to 3-2 in the third. But Andover Central’s Jackson Lewallen added a run in the fourth inning after leading off with a single, stealing second, advancing to third on a throwing error and scoring on another throwing error.

Courbat took the loss for Eudora.

Bishop Ward advances in Class 4A Division II

Bishop Ward has a losing record on the season. But Ward, seeded seventh, moved into the semifinals of Class 4A Division II with a 3-0 win over No. 2 seed Pratt in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Emporia. Pratt finished the season at 19-4.
