Area high school athletes win Gatorade Kansas softball, girls soccer awards
For the third consecutive season, Olathe East High School’s Allison Stewart was named the Gatorade Kansas Softball Player of the Year.
Stewart, a right-handed pitcher and first baseman who is headed to the University of Arkansas, posted a 17-1 record this season with a 0.82 ERA, five shutouts and two perfect games. In 102 1/3 innings, she had 156 strikeouts with just 10 walks.
She also made her mark offensively, batting .310 with four home runs, 38 RBI and a .536 slugging percentage. She finished her high school career with 168 RBIs.
Olathe East ended its spring season with a 24-1 record and runner-up finish at the Kansas Class 6A state tournament.
Gatorade soccer honor
After leading Blue Valley North to a Kansas Class 6A regional championship game, junior defender and midfielder Parker Roberts was tabbed as the Gatorade Kansas Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Parker, who has verbally committed to the University of Miami, finished the season with 15 goals and four assists in 18 games for the Mustangs. She was also named the Eastern Kansas League midfielder of the year.
Blue Valley North ended its season with a 1-0 loss to Olathe East in the regional championship and finished its season with a 10-8 record.
She is the second soccer player from the 913 area to be honored this season with the Gatorade award. St. James Academy’s Steven Enna who won the boys award in the fall.
Scholarly soccer players
The Bishop Miege High School girls soccer team made it to the state semifinals for the first time since 2003 and placed third in Kansas Class 4-1A state tournament with just four seniors.
That feat was not the squad’s only elite accomplishment of the season.
The Stags were also selected for a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season after posting a team grade-point average of 3.74.
According to coach Nate Huppe, 16 of his 20 players finished academically with a grade-point average greater than 3.5. Seven of his players had a GPA of 4.0 or higher.
