SM South receiver a spark in football all-star game
Nick Oliver stands out on a football field. He is 6-foot-5 and weighs 220 pounds. Those physical attributes, plus good hands, have him headed this fall to play at Emporia State University.
But Oliver, a graduate of Shawnee Mission South High School, had one more football game left to represent the Raiders. He competed last week for the Kansas squad in the 23rd Annual Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Blue Springs High School.
“It is a great feeling, but it is a bittersweet feeling,” Oliver said after the game.
During the game, Oliver proved to be a big target.
In the first half, Oliver caught a pass for nine yards. He made his biggest impact, though, midway through the third quarter.
Missouri tied the game at 14-14 and was surging with momentum. Kansas got it right back when Oliver hauled in a long pass from Danten Cosentino for a 67-yard touchdown.
The play gave Kansas a 21-14 lead with 7 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Those were the last points that Kansas would score in a tough 22-21 loss to the Missouri all-stars.
Despite the setback, Oliver said he enjoyed the experience.
“It is a crazy feeling,” he said. “I am out here with four of my teammates. It is the last time we get to play together. It is the last time any of us get to put on our high school helmets.”
