913-area girls hoops notebook: BV North player scores 1,000th point in dramatic fashion
Here are five takeaways from the past week in 913-area high school girls basketball:
1. Blue Valley North’s Michaela Delagarza showed the Kansas City that she means business, scoring 44 points in the KA-MO Classic girls basketball tournament championship game.
She set a personal single-game record and scored her 1,000th career point in the Mustangs’ 65-60 victory over Lee’s Summit North. She had 21 points in the final eight minutes, with 14 consecutive points during that span.
She had six games with more than 36 points last season.
2. Across the Eastern Kansas League conference, Gardner Edgerton’s Kelsey Leffert has also had an impressive showing lately. She has scored 59 points in the Trailblazer’s last three victories to help them get back on track.
Since starting the season with a 2-3 record, the Trailblazers have won five of their last six and four of those victories came against EKL opponents.
3. Olathe South is the Sunflower League’s lone undefeated team and a big factor for Falcons’ success has been their ability to share the ball.
Three Falcons are ranked among the leaders in the Sunflower League for assists, through nine games. Makayla Gooch leads the conference with 6.3 per game. Teammatdes Kala Holder and Kacey Kennett follow with 2.9 and 2.6, respectively, per game.
4. New coach Brian McIntosh has the Shawnee Mission North girls off to a solid start in Sunflower League play with a 4-1 record and 6-3 overall mark. The Indians had a 4-12 record last season.
McIntosh has some experience in the Sunflower League, where he coached Shawnee Mission Northwest for two years. He spent the last five with Emporia State as an assistant coach.
Most recently, the Indians topped Shawnee Mission East for the second time, sparked by a game-high 16 points from Jazmin Williams.
5. Shawnee Mission West might not look like much of a threat with a 6-6 record, but the Vikings appear to be finding their footing in the Sunflower League.
The Vikings have notched three straight victories and SM West is one of six teams in the conference with winning records in league play. SM West’s Kenzie Loe is the conference’s second leading scorer. She is averaging 20.2 points per game and leading the league with 9.8 rebounds per game.
