The Star and Royals salute 104 Scholar-Athlete winners
The Scholar-Athletes from each of the 104 participating Kansas City-area high schools are being honored for their athletic and academic excellence, as well as their involvement in other activities and overall impact on their schools. This is the 31st year that Scholar-Athletes have been honored by The Kansas City Star.
Judges on behalf of The Star selected each school winner. Semifinal judges narrowed the field to the top 10 girls and top 10 boys finalists. The resumes of the finalists were given to the final judges. Selection of overall boy and girl winners is based upon this formula: 45 percent for athletics, 35 percent for academics, 10 percent for activities and 10 percent for overall and community impact.
In addition to their newspaper recognition, the Royals will award Scholar-Athlete school winners with ticket vouchers, and overall winners Arianna Person of St. James Academy and Sam Guinn of Blue Valley Northwest will throw out the first pitch at the June 24 Royals game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
