Special night for Blue Valley North graduate Jack Sock

Jack Sock’s entrance at his alma mater on Friday night was quite subtle, especially considering he’s a professional tennis player and one of Blue Valley North High School’s most decorated graduates.

Sock, wearing a blazer and jeans, was greeted by the school’s cheerleaders in the commons area. He commented that pictures sitting on a table nearby were a few years old, based on the endorsements. He also signed a few autographs before settling into a spot in the bleachers above the Mustangs’ bench at their basketball game.

Sock’s induction into the Blue Valley North High School Athletic Hall of Fame brought him back. But it was the memories of his four successful years with the Mustangs tennis team and nights spent watching basketball games in that same gym that Sock remembers fondly.

“A lot of people like to say that I am from Lincoln or from Nebraska, but I grew up for most of my life here,” Sock said, referring to his time at BV North. “I still have massive ties to Lincoln, but this is home for me and going here for four years and playing on a team with my brother means a lot.”

Sock was introduced at Friday night’s halftime ceremony by former tennis coach Ann Dark, who gave fans a quick rundown of his career highlights. He posted an 80-0 record and dropped just one set in his high school tennis career. He won four singles state titles and led the Mustangs to three team state titles from 2008-2011.

Now, Sock is the No. 26-ranked singles player in the world with two major titles under his belt. He won the 2011 U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Championship with Melanie Oudin and the 2014 Wimbledon doubles championship with Vasek Pospisil.
