Gardner Edgerton High School to join Sunflower League

Gardner Edgerton High School officials announced Friday that the school will join the Sunflower League in June 2017 for all sports except football.

The Trailblazers’ football team is committed to the Eastern Kansas League through the 2017 season, but will join the Sunflower League the following season.

According to a release from the Gardner Edgerton School District, the Sunflower League extended an invitation on Sept. 11 to maintain an even number of teams, with the addition of Olathe West in 2017.

“The Sunflower League will continue to meet the needs of our students and provide an abundance of opportunities in athletics or activities,” Gardner Edgerton principal Mark Meyer said in a release. “The Sunflower League has a great reputation. We are honored and look forward to being its newest member.”

Gardner Edgerton and Olathe West will be new additions to the Sunflower League, which currently has 12 schools: Lawrence, Lawrence Free State, Leavenworth, Olathe East, Olathe North, Olathe Northwest, Olathe South, Shawnee Mission East, Shawnee Mission North, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Shawnee Mission South and Shawnee Mission West.
