The Blue Valley West High School volleyball team rose to the occasion recently, when the Jaguars captured the program’s first state title since 2005.

BV West didn’t have to play a third set in any of their five matches and topped Blue Valley Northwest 27-25, 25-12, for the Kansas Class 6A title at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. BV West finished its season with a 40-4 record.

Blue Valley North defeated Olathe Northwest in the third-place match.

Class 5A: Thunder win it all

As she inked her letter of intent to Stanford University on Wednesday, St. James Academy senior Audriana Fitzmorris took a moment to reflect on her volleyball career with the Thunder.

St. James finished either first or second in the state tournament all four of Fitzmorris’ years. The Thunder won three state titles and earned a No. 1 national ranking, as well. St. James teammate Jenna Gray also signed with Stanford.

St. James defeated St. Thomas Aquinas in straight sets in the Kansas Class 5A volleyball state final. The two schools have met in the last three title matches.

“The state title was very rewarding,” said Fitzmorris, who helped St. James to a 46-2 record this season. “We had a great family of girls and to be able to go through the whole process with them and have that journey come to a great culmination was incredible.”

Class 4A Division I: Stags are champs

Bishop Miege dropped just one set across five matches and won its third consecutive Kansas Class 4A Division I state title. The Stags beat top-seeded McPherson in straight sets in the final to finish the season 32-11. It was Miege’s seventh state title in eight seasons.

Class 2A

Heritage Christian Academy finished second in the Kansas Class 2A volleyball state tournament.

The fifth-seeded Chargers beat the No. 2 seed in the state semifinals and played the top-seeded team to three sets in the championship match.
