All the tension and excitement that built up through 110 minutes of regulation and overtimes was abruptly relieved when Jordan Stenberg’s penalty kick connected with the back of the soccer net on Saturday.

It was the decisive blow in Blue Valley Northwest’s 3-2 victory against Washburn Rural in the Kansas Class 6A boys soccer state championship match, giving the Huskies a 6-5 advantage in the second round of penalty kicks.

Brandon Stanczak, Blake Shadwick, Peyton Brown, Matthew Carey and Noah Fetter added the other five BV Northwest successful penalty kicks and goalkeeper Connor Mathes came up with two big saves.

Stenberg was immediately met on the field at the College Boulevard Activity Center with a hoard of teammates eager to celebrate the team’s second state title in three seasons. Carey, a senior transfer, said it was the perfect ending to his first and only season with the Huskies.

“I’ve been waiting to do something like that my whole soccer career,” Carey said. “It feels good to have ended my last soccer game doing that.”

Carey gave the Huskies an early lead with a goal in the 18th minute, but Washburn Rural scored two unanswered goals to take control. Brian Kim, who assisted Carey’s goal, scored the equalizer in the 67th minute. The teams then fought through two 10-minute and two five-minute overtimes without another goal.

The Huskies finished the season with a 19-1-0 record.

Olathe East, the Class 6A defending state champion, ended its season with back-to-back losses and finished fourth at the state tournament. The Hawks fell to Dodge City 4-1 in the third place game on Saturday.

Blue Valley Southwest battled through 110 scoreless minutes, but could not convert in penalty kicks and lost 1-0 to Andover in the third-place game. The Timberwolves trailed 4-2 in penalty kicks and finished the season with a 15-6-0 record.

Class 4-3-2-1A
