BV West cross country runner competing in elite national meets
Just a few months after winning the Kansas Class 5A cross country state championship, Blue Valley West High School’s Stuart McNutt will try to add a national championship to his resume.
McNutt will compete in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals on Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego. He qualified for the meet by finishing in the top 10 at a recent Midwest regional meet in Kenosha, Wisc. Last weekend, McNutt placed 10th at the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
McNutt won the Kansas Class 5A state title with a time of 15 minutes, 24.50 seconds and helped the Jaguars capture second place as a team. He won the Kansas Class 6A state title as a junior before Blue Valley West dropped to the 5A classification.
Soccer All-Americans
After helping the St. Thomas Aquinas soccer team win its second straight state title in November, senior centerback Matthew Holland was selected All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Holland, who was also voted the Eastern Kansas League Defender of the Year, was one of seven defenders to earn the honor.
The Saints finished the season with a 19-2 record, which included shutout victories against Bishop Carroll and Harmon in the state tournament. They outscored opponents 17-2 in the postseason.
Rockhurst High School senior Robert DeWitt III, an Overland Park native, earned All-American honors as a midfielder.
Atlantic 10 honors Kalinoski
Davidson guard and Olathe East High School graduate Tyler Kalinoski was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
He averaged 22 points, six rebounds and four assists during two games and shot 65.2 percent from the floor, with a 70.6 mark behind the three-point line. He scored all of his game-high 19 points in the second half of Davidson’s victory over Charlotte and matched a career high with 25 points against Stetson.
Kalinoski leads the Wildcats, averaging 16.7 points per game with 27 three-pointers overall in a team-best 29.3 minutes per contest.
Brooks is SEC Player of the Week
Olathe Northwest graduate Kelsey Brooks was selected as the SEC Basketball Player of the Week after leading Arkansas to victories against Iowa and Richmond in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout Tournament. She was also selectred the tournament’s most valuable player.
Brooks tallied a career-best 24 points against Iowa and notched 17 points and six rebounds against Richmond. For the two games, she averaged 20.5 points, seven rebounds, two assists and 2.5 steals.
Overall, Brooks is averaging a team-best 16.5 points and 1.8 steals per game, with 18 three-pointers in eight games for the 6-2 Razorbacks.
