MISSOURI DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS

1. Is this the year for Fort Osage?

On a victories-per-season measurement, Fort Osage has enjoyed as much success over the past five years as any program in Missouri Class 5. The Indians have lost only two regular season games in that time span.

But they’re still searching for the first state championship in school history.

The Indians, 9-1, will battle Truman on Friday in the Missouri Class 5, District 7 championship, and the path to St. Louis from there isn’t an easy one. The winner Friday will face the winner of Staley-Park Hill, a matchup featuring two more teams ranked among the top-five in the class.

Fort Osage is led by quarterback Skylar Thompson, a Kansas State commit who accounted for five touchdowns last week.

2. A class of champions

The past three Missouri Class 6 state champions — Christian Brothers College (2014), Blue Springs (2013 and 2012) and Blue Springs South (2011) — are still alive in the quarterfinals.

Two remain unbeaten.

On Friday, Blue Springs South, 11-0, plays at Francis Howell, 10-0; CBC, 11-0, plays host to Hazelwood Central, 9-2; and Blue Springs, 6-5, will travel to Springfield to play Kickapoo, 11-0.

Another intriguing story line in Class 6? Blue Springs and Blue Springs South are on opposite sides of the bracket.

3. Can anyone dethrone Webb City?

Webb City has won five straight Missouri Class 4 state championships, and the Cardinals are unbeaten again this season. But if anyone can end their reign, might it be a team from the Kansas City area?

Kearney, the last team other than Webb City to win the Class 4 state title, will play Platte County in a district championship game Friday. Kearney has outscored its past eight opponents 402-55. Marcus Harris has run for 23 touchdowns this season.

Harrisonville, 11-0, will meet Center, 10-1, in another district championship game. The winner is on track for a potential date with Webb City in the quarterfinals.
