Friday night football (Oct. 30): Games to watch, 810 Varsity online games and KC area schedule

Where’s your favorite high school football team playing this week? Check out The Star’s Friday and Saturday schedule, as well as two Friday game previews and a list of Friday games that 810 Varsity will be broadcast online.

GAMES TO WATCH

Blue Springs (5-5) at Raymore-Peculiar (6-4)

Only a month ago, these pair of Suburban Gold Conference squads were trying to dig themselves out of early-season slides. Blue Springs lost its first four games of the season. Raymore-Peculiar, meanwhile, lost four of its first seven.

But that’s in the past.

On Friday, thanks to recent multi-week winning streaks, they match up with a trip to a Missouri Class 6 district championship on the line.

While Blue Springs tailback Tresten Spruell has emerged as an offensive weapon, the Wildcats have shown their greatest improvement on the defensive side of the football. After allowing 34.8 points per game over the first six weeks, they have trimmed that number to 18.3 over the past four games — all victories.

Blue Springs defeated Raymore-Peculiar 21-14 on Oct. 2. Raymore-Peculiar has responded with three straight wins.

Olathe Northwest (6-2) at Olathe North (7-1)

In a Kansas Class 6A District 4 game, Olathe Northwest and Olathe North each enter Friday night’s game with 1-1 records in district play, with a loss to Lawrence and a victory against Olathe East.

Olathe Northwest is enjoying the program’s most successful season, which includes victories in five of its last six games. That streak alone would have tied their win total from last year, but coach Chip Sherman and the Ravens are looking for more.

Olathe North is coming off its first loss of the season, a heartbreaking setback on a last-second touchdown drive by Lawrence. The Eagles are led by veteran players Vinnie Shabazz, Isaiah Simmons and Matt Wright.
